Product Description
Clouser's approach to fly design begins and ends onstream, with a lot of time spent in between at the workbench. Careful observation of the behaviour, habitats, and physical features of the foods fish eat is essential to developing a fly that looks and acts like the real thing. But the pattern must also pass rigorous standards of durability, ease of casting, and most importantly, consistently catching fish before it can be called a winner. Including variations on his famous original Deep Minnow, Clouser presents recipes for seventeen of his most successful patterns for baitfish, subsurface freshwater foods, and surface flies with detailed explanations and superb full-colour photographs to accompany every step. In sections devoted to materials and tying techniques, Clouser offers insight into his methods and provides a solid foundation for designing flies with confidence.

5 out of 5 stars I've waited for this book for a long time.   February 17, 2006

If you are reading this review you must know who Bob Clouser is and why he is so deservedly famous among fly fishermen. This book gives you detailed and clearly illustrated instructions for tying his extremely effective fly patterns. He also discusses the best materials, colors and tying techniques to use with each fly. I thought I was pretty good at tying all types of Clouser flys but this book offers tips and tricks that immediately improved my tying. It also illustrates several patterns that I've never seen before even though I try and visit his shop in Middletown at least once a year. Perhaps the most important information you will learn from this book is how to present and fish these flys more effectively. Bob discusses and gives tips on the best presentation/fishing techniques for each fly. In short, here between two covers is everything you could need or want to know about Clouser flys.
If it sounds like I'm extremely enthusiastic about Clouser flys I think I have a reason to be. The biggest fly rod fish I've ever caught in the salt the Delaware river and the Schuylkill rever were all caught on Clouser flys. I think every fly fisher should add this book to his or her library.

5 out of 5 stars "Clouser's Flies" is an exceptional Fly-tying book.   February 20, 2006

"Clouser's Flies" is an exceptional Fly-tying book. The writing is clear and concise, the photographs are excellent, and the chapters are well thought-out. This book is mandatory for the fly-tying beginner to the advanced tier, and for those of you that are interested in the versatile Clouser Fly and streamer fishing. Clearly this is the best book produced on tying the Clouser Fly; understandably so, it is written by the person who first developed the fly. On a scale from 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest rating, this text is a 5. In Brief, this book is a must purchase for your fly-tying library.

5 out of 5 stars Simplicity rules!   January 11, 2007

I love simplicity at my tying bench. While its fun to really get in there and whip up some multiple layered, exotic material, ultra-realistic pattern from time to time, in my day-to-day fishing, I want patterns that catch fish, tie up quickly, and don't break my heart when I end up snapping them off.
Bob Clouser's patterns in his new book are just what the doctor ordered; they tie up quickly, use a minimum of materials, and most importantly, they catch the heck out of fish!
I'll face any fish, anywhere, with the appropriately sized and colored Clouser Deep Minnow. It's that good. His other patterns are equally as effective, and who better to learn from than the guy that developed them.
I absolutely recommend this book for the excellent intructions and clear photography, which make this a useful tool for both novice and experienced tiers.

It has been a long time since I read a book with such detail. Not only are the directions and explainations to the point, but the photographs are supurb and eliminate any questions that usually arrise due to lenghtly explanations.

I have been tying for several years and books like this one are few and far between.

5 out of 5 stars Naturally fantastic   January 4, 2007

As a fly fisherman, I am well aquainted with Clouser's Minnow, a fly box standard, so naturally, I expected and received the genius of Bob Clouser in this book.
I am so pleased with the high-quality pictures and explanations of when, where and why each of the flies catch fish and most importantly, how to properly tie them.
He even goes into great detail to explain what materials to use and even which flies are his favorites and why.
Thank you, Bob for a fantastic book which should be in every fly tier's library.
