5 out of 5 stars The Re-Release of Fishing Bamboo   October 29, 2007

While I was hoping that the newly released version of John Gierach's original classic had been revised, I was not disappointed when I read my new copy. The first edition was an outstanding insight into the "cane mystic" and getting a new copy simply gave me a good excuse to re-read it and find out what I'd missed the first time. If you have the original, you don't need the reissue, but if you haven't read it in a while, you may have forgotten how good it was in the first place. Besides, most great literature comes out in a new package from time to time; why should John Gierach's work be excluded?

5 out of 5 stars if you are a John G. fan....   November 19, 2009

then you gotta get this one. I have all his books but the one that's very expensive to find.

This book really delves into the what's and the why's of John's love for 'cane.' While I will never trade my graphite pack rods in...it's nice to read about his reasonings. I think of this as insight and research into my favorite author more than anyting.

5 out of 5 stars Great Treatment on the Higher Side Of Fly-Fishing   December 21, 2009

Bamboo rods represent a very well defined segment of the fly fishing world. It is the segment of the sport where the more enlightened tend to dip their flies. Well, at least that is what I thought until I read this book by John Gierach. After reading this book, I see that bamboo is not for those few well heeled folks living in Aspen. Rather, it is something that is accessible to those who happen to love the sport. Love for the tradition associated with fly fishing is all that is needed to enjoy fishing with a cane rod, well and some money. All in all, this is one of my favorite fly fishing books in my library. Get it and get the bamboo bug.

2 out of 5 stars Wishing for a new tile by Gierach -Reissue from Lyons Press   September 30, 2007

While anxiously anticipating the publication of a new title, or at least a new edition from favorite fly fishing author John Gierach, this 2007 book from Lyons press only changed the NEW SUBTITLE from the original one for FISHING BAMBOO by Gierach. Just a warning -not to be disappointed to discover this book is EXACTLY the same as the first edition -with the same old, good advice expected from Gierach. The new subtitle gives the hopeful impression that this book might have something additional from Gierach. Now, if you don't already have FISHING BAMBOO, it is an excellent title for any fishing enthusiasts. First editions are preferred for collections, though. The two star rating was giving for the disappointment, but an extra star over one, for the merit of the original book****
